Shopify Product Schema: What Your Theme Outputs and What’s Missing
Last Updated on October 15, 2026 by Corey Fox
Shopify product schema is added automatically. Online Store 2.0 themes like Dawn output it through the Liquid structured_data filter, which covers the basics: product name, image, description, brand, URL, and an Offer with price, currency and stock status. Products with variants are output as a ProductGroup. What it leaves out is what earns the extras in Google: review ratings, shipping details, return policy, and in many stores GTINs. Those come from your review app, Google Merchant Center, or custom code, and that’s usually where duplicate schema starts.
What Shopify outputs by default
Most current themes have one line in the product section, usually sections/main-product.liquid:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{{ product | structured_data }}
</script>According to Shopify’s Liquid documentation, that filter outputs a schema.org Product when the product has no variants and a ProductGroup when it has one or more. Here’s what it includes and what it doesn’t:
| Field | In the default output? | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| name, description, image, url | Yes | Product title, description, featured image |
| brand | Yes | The product’s Vendor field |
| offers (price, priceCurrency, availability) | Yes | Variant price and inventory |
| Variants | Yes, as a ProductGroup | Product options |
| aggregateRating, review | No | Your review app |
| shippingDetails | No | Merchant Center settings or custom code |
| hasMerchantReturnPolicy | No | Merchant Center settings or custom code |
| gtin | Not in Shopify’s documented example | The variant Barcode field, if your theme or app maps it |
Older themes are different. Some vintage themes use inline microdata (itemprop attributes) instead of JSON-LD, and some have both. Check before you assume.
What’s missing, and whether it matters
- Ratings. Google only shows stars from
aggregateRating, and the default output has none. Review apps add it, usually inside a second Product block. That’s the most common cause of duplicate Product schema and of review stars not showing. - Shipping and returns. Search Console’s Merchant listings report flags these as missing fields. They’re recommended, not required, so the warnings won’t stop your products appearing. You can also set shipping and return policies at the account level in Merchant Center instead of in the markup.
- GTIN. Recommended for merchant listings. Fill in the Barcode field on each variant first. If your output still has no
gtin, your theme isn’t mapping it.
Check what your store outputs in 2 minutes
- Paste a product URL into Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Count the Product or ProductGroup items it detects. More than one means duplicates.
- Open each item. Ratings should sit on the same item as the price. If the rating is on one block and the price on another, Google treats them as two products.
- Or run the URL through the free Shopify Schema Conflict Checker, which also tells you which app added each block.
How to fill the gaps without creating duplicates
The rule is one Product block per product page. You have two ways to get there:
- Extend the theme’s block. Replace the
structured_dataline with your own JSON-LD that keeps everything Shopify outputs and adds the rating from your review app’s metafields, plus GTIN, shipping and returns if you want them. - Turn off the app’s block. Most review apps have a setting or a support request to stop their own Product schema. The review app guides cover Judge.me, Yotpo, Okendo, Loox and Stamped.
Make the change on a duplicate theme, preview it, then retest the same URL before you publish.
Common questions
Does Shopify add schema automatically?
Yes. Online Store 2.0 themes output Product schema on product pages and Article schema on blog posts. It’s a basic version, and it has no ratings.
Do I need a schema app?
Usually not. Most stores need the default block plus a rating, which is a one-time code change. Schema apps charge monthly, and many add their own Product block on top of the theme’s, which creates the duplicate you were trying to avoid.
Does FAQ schema still work on Shopify?
Not for rich results. Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. The markup won’t hurt a store, but it won’t show in search either.
