How Much Does Shopify SEO Cost? Real Prices for Audits, Fixes and Retainers
Last Updated on October 15, 2026 by Corey Fox
Shopify SEO costs $0 to $80 a month for apps, $1,500 to $15,000 for a one-time audit, $2,500 to $5,000 for a fixed-scope fix project, and $1,500 to $10,000 a month for an ongoing retainer. Where you land depends on one question: is your problem one-time (technical issues in your theme and catalog) or ongoing (content, links, and AI search)? Most stores should pay for the one-time fixes before they pay anyone monthly.
Shopify SEO prices at a glance
| Option | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| SEO apps | $0 to $80/month | Meta tags, image alt text, redirects, sometimes schema |
| One-time DIY tools and kits | $30 to $200 | Code or templates for a single problem, installed by you |
| Freelancer, hourly | $150 to $300/hour | Whatever you scope, billed by time |
| One-time audit | $1,500 to $15,000 | A list of problems and fixes. Usually no implementation |
| Fixed-scope fix project | $2,500 to $5,000 | Technical fixes made in your theme, one time |
| Monthly retainer | $1,500 to $10,000/month | Ongoing content, links, reporting and fixes |
| In-house hire | $40,000+/year | One person, plus their tools |
Ranges come from published price pages from Shopify agencies in the US, UK and Canada, plus Shopify’s own SEO pricing guide. Large catalogs and competitive categories sit at the top of each range.
One-time vs. ongoing: what you’re actually paying for
One-time work fixes how Shopify and your apps present the store to Google. It’s done once, then checked occasionally:
- Duplicate Product schema from your theme and review app
- Products reachable at several URLs, and tag or filter pages wasting crawl
- Collections competing for the same keywords
- Duplicate titles and missing H1s across templates
- App scripts slowing every page
Ongoing work grows traffic over time: new collection and content pages, earning links, and getting cited in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. This is what a retainer should be paying for.
Don’t pay monthly for things Shopify already does. Sitemaps, SSL, canonical tags on products, and a basic robots.txt come with every store.
What I charge
Fixed prices, published, so you can compare:
- Shopify Schema Kit: $39, one time. Fixes duplicate Product schema yourself.
- Shopify SEO Audit: $1,500 fixed. A ranked fix list for your whole store in 10 business days.
- AI Visibility Audit: $2,500 fixed. The deep-dive on where ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews cite you, and where they don’t.
- Shopify SEO Fix Sprint: $2,500 fixed. Two weeks, the technical fixes done in your theme. The audit fee is credited if you book within 30 days.
- Retainers from $2,000/month, for stores where content and links are the bottleneck.
Red flags in a Shopify SEO quote
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google.
- Link packages. “100 backlinks for $X” is usually low-quality links that can hurt you.
- A monthly fee with no named deliverables. You should know what gets done each month.
- No access to your own data. Search Console and GA4 should stay in your name.
- Charging for setup Shopify does by default. Sitemaps and SSL aren’t a service.
How to decide what to spend
- New store, under about 500 organic visits a month: an SEO app and free tools. Fix the basics yourself. Run the free Schema Conflict Checker on a product page.
- Established store, $1M to $10M a year: audit first, fix the technical issues once, then add a retainer only if content and links are what’s holding you back.
- Large catalog or Shopify Plus: expect the top of each range. Catalog size drives the cost of both audits and fixes.
Common questions
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify handles hosting, speed basics, sitemaps and canonicals well. Its weak spots are duplicate product URLs, thin tag and filter pages, and theme and app schema that overlap. Those are fixable once.
Should I pay for Shopify store optimization?
If the offer names specific fixes and a fixed price, it’s worth comparing. If it’s a monthly fee for “optimization” with no list of what changes, skip it.
How long until SEO spend pays back?
Technical and schema fixes usually show in 30 to 60 days. Content and links compound over 90 days or more. Ask for timelines per workstream, not one number for everything.
